News Summary

As you begin work on your final project, the feature story, you will need to know the perspectives, paradigms, and approaches guiding the scientists studying your topic, and you will need to know the general feelings of the scientific community about whatever it is you will be writing about. One way to get started on this is to see what people are saying about your topic.

Research the topic and find 4-5 of the most recent articles written about it. Read them and develop a short news summary to get you started. This assignment is similar to your first assignment, the online source review, but it must be about the topic you are choosing for your feature story. It also should be longer, about 3-4 pages long. Write at least one good paragraph about each of the articles and try to figure out questions such as

  • how the research fits into the prevailing scientific paradigm guiding this specific area of the field

  • how "your researchers" differ from others who are investigating similar concerns

  • what the researchers think the applications of their work will be

  • what others think of the research
