01:447:354 Social, Legal, and Ethical Implications of the New Genetics Sec. 2

This course will satisfy the 447 elective requirements for students majoring in the biological sciences. It also is an approved elective for students majoring in Genetics. This course satisfies the SAS Core Curriculum Goal 21st Century Challenges 21C-c: Analyze the relationship that science and technology have to a contemporary social issue.

Genetics 01:447:380 or Genetic Analysis I 01:447:384 and Gen Bio Lab 01:119:117 or 01:119:102

Course Description

Social, legal and ethical implications of genetics, for example: genetic screening across lifespan,  genetic and genomic technologies,  stem cells and cloning, genetic modifications of plants, animals and humans, genetic enhancement, and gene therapy.

Course Satisfies Learning Goals

1. Knowledge specific goals: Know the terms, concepts and theories in genetics.

2. Integrate the material from multiple courses and research. That is, to think holistically and to see the whole as well as the parts.

3. Use genetic information and ideas to critically analyze published research articles in genetics and understand its relevance to society.

4. Appreciate the role of the science major in improving the public's perception of science.

Grading:

Group case study position paper and presentation: 25%

Group current event presentations: 15%

Case Studies: 10%

Class Partcipation: 20%

Weekly blog entries and reflective writing - 20%

Pre-class quizzes and polls: 10%

There is not a suitable textbook. Original research articles, reviews and book chapters will be available on the SAKAI site.
