Prerequisites

Fundamentals of Neurobiology (146:245) and Fundamentals of Cell Biology (146:270), plus at least 1 Advanced course (Advanced Neurobiology I 01:146:445, Advanced Neurobiology II 01:146:447, Advanced Cell Bio 01:146:470 or Advanced Developmental Biology 01:146:472) and 1 hands-on research course (Research in CBN 01:146:307-308 or 1:146:406-407, Advanced Neurobiology Lab 01:146:448, Advanced Cell Bio Lab 01:146:471, 1 semester of Independent study 01:146:201-202 or Honors Research 01:146:408-409).

Course Description

The course will be taught by three CBN faculty members, each responsible for teaching a module on a topic of choice. Each module consists of a mixture of lectures by the teaching faculty and student presentation/discussion of assigned primary research articles. Each student will also be required to write a brief critical review of the assigned research papers. Topics include mammalian brain development, sensory system development and function, and cortical circuit function and plasticity.

3. Use scientific reasoning to evaluate the potential for current research and new discoveries to improve our understanding of cell biology and neuroscience and its relevance to human health and to our society.  

Grading Policy

The final grade in this course will be based upon student presentation (50%), class participation (20%), and a written paper (30% of the grade).
